Energy cost saving and emissions reduction program

With Global, Australian and State driven targets in place to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050, South West Queensland (SWQ) councils agreed to commence a program of work to save costs, reduce grid power / energy usage, and employ more renewable energy.

Through Remote Area Board Funding from the Queensland State Government, SWQ councils are participating in a two year program which will identify:

  • short term opportunities to use more renewable energy and reduce energy costs

  • how to reduce emissions associated with current assets

  • how council’s practices and procurement of goods and services can progress towards carbon zero practices

  • in-direct abatement projects within each council area

  • potential offset options.

Based on the findings of the above, each council will be presented with an individual Carbon Zero Strategy as a basis to guide council decision making and planning as Australia transitions to net zero emissions.
