Waste and resource recovery management and Carbon Farming
Waste and Resource Recovery Management
Initiated by the Queensland State Government, the South West Queensland Regional Waste and Resource Recovery Management Plan identifies a series of actions to be taken at a regional scale and for individual councils to improve waste and resource recovery outcomes in the South West region, and aims to achieve a balance between a clear implementation plan for the best whole of system outcome for the region, whilst also reflecting the aspirations and requirements of each individual council and their rate payers.
To be released in early 2024.
Carbon Farming
Carbon farming is emerging as a significant and rapidly growing land use option for businesses to reduce greenhouse gases and store carbon.
New industries such as carbon farming and renewables must be able to co-exist with traditional industries (such as Ag and Resources) in regional, rural and remote communities. South West Queensland is currently host to some of the largest volume of carbon farming projects in the country, which in aggregate is resulting in some unintended social impacts - especially where entire properties are dedicated to carbon farming at the expense of other agricultural practices.
To better understand the benefits, co benefits and dis benefits of carbon farming, SWQROC commissioned a Study into the Impacts of Carbon Farming on South West Queensland Communities.
Whilst this study is currently being finalised it has highlighted that "rapid uptake of carbon farming in small communities has created some tensions".
